Steve Jobs told USA Today that the Apple App Store will launch with “more than 500″ applications Thursday night for the iPhone and iPod touch. Of these, 25% will be free and 90% (of those for sale) will cost $9.99 or less. “This is the biggest launch of my career,” said Jobs. Analyst Tim Bajarin at Creative Strategies said, “When IBM introduced the PC, it was good, but it didn’t take off until people started discovering the software.” It’s these apps then, he adds, that will “dramatically differentiates the iPhone” from Treos and BlackBerrys. Indeed, while consumers are focused on the launch of the iPhone 3G device, it’s the App Store which has analysts in such a tizzy.

We’d heard that the latest incarnation of the Chocolate series from LG on Verizon would be launching next Monday, but we’ve got some great news to close out the week, fans: you’ll be able to plunk down your cash a full day early. It turns out that the Chocolate 3 will actually be launching this Sunday, July 13 for the expected $129.99 after rebate, featuring a 2 megapixel cam, GPS, 3.5mm headphone jack, and an in-your-face set of external music controls, all in your choice of black or light blue. Just add an 8GB microSD card and the Rhapsody tie-in, and you’ve got yourself a little musical powerhouse here.

Marc Ecko has really given new meaning to the term “sweat shop!”

With security cameras that show the action inside the Ecko MFG facilities, the website shows the girls at work and lets you vote on your favorite employee. Learn who handles machinery the best (wink, wink) who does everything with their twin (everything!), and who handles the HEAD (sigh…) duties at the factory. It’s all a pretty elaborate way to show the steps that go into making a pair of jeans, but it fits perfectly with the their tagline, “Made With Love.”

It has taken long enough, but Gigabyte finally saw fit to make official its intriguing M912V. If you’ll recall, this critter popped up and caught eyes at Computex, as it’s essentially a netbook with a swivel screen — think Tablet PC, but miniature. Specs wise, you’re looking at an 8.9-inch WXGA (1,280 x 768) LED-backlit panel, Intel’s 1.6GHz Atom processor, a 2.5-inch HDD (120/160/250GB), 1.3-megapixel camera, twin 1.5-watt speakers, 1GB of RAM and your choice of Windows XP, Vista or Linux. Furthermore, you’ll find Bluetooth, WiFi, an ExpressCard slot, a wide of array of ports and even an option for HSDPA expansion. It should be noted that there’s no internal optical drive (nor a price or release date just yet), but at least Gigabyte’s offering up a netbook with some inkling of innovation, right?

For those who missed the February introduction, the firm is hailing the web-connected Didj (pictured) as the “first completely customizable educational gaming platform,” and given that it is summertime here in the US of A, this is probably your only shot at getting your kiddo to do anything beneficial for their brain for the next two to three months. Fujitsu’s LifeBook P8010 was a star in its own right, but just months after its release, that original version is already looking stale. The newfangled LifeBook P8010 Limited Pink Gold Edition sports a sure-to-be-polarizing high-gloss finish, integrated 3.5G (HSDPA) WWAN, 12.1-inch WXGA SuperFine widescreen panel and Intel’s Core 2 Duo SL7100 processor. You’ll also find essentials like a 1.3-megapixel camera, dual-layer DVD writer, a battery good for six hours and a fingerprint reader. Looks like this one will go for $2,899 over in Australia (that’s around $2,748 in Yankee dollars), but we’ve no word on whether it’ll roll out globally.

According to a report in the Economic Times, Sony will be introducing a slimmer (well, “slimer” if you want the direct quote), sleeker, and “more suave” version of the PS2 in Indian and European markets come Fall. If you believe what you read, the new system will include a built-in power supply, will make its debut by Diwali (which falls on October 28th), and will keep the current sticker price of Rs 6,990 (or about $162). The article also claims that Sony will bring its PlayStation Network to India by the end of the year, which should make a lot of competition hungry gamers very happy. Sony reps say that the move is driven by the belief that, “Console gaming is in its nascent stage in India,” adding, “We have no plans to phase out PS2 anytime soon.” The PS2: you just can’t kill it!

Motorola hasn’t exactly been doing the best job keeping these two handsets under wraps, but it now looks like it can now rest a bit easier and let the details fly, as it’s finally gotten official with both the MING A1600 and MING A1800. As we’ve seen, the two handsets are nearly identical, with each packing a 2.4-inch QVGA touchscreen, a 3-megapixel camera, integrated Bluetooth, a microSD card slot, an FM radio and, of particular note, built-in GPS (but no WiFi, as previously rumored). The MING A1800, however, adds two SIM card slots, which will let you hop between GSM and CDMA networks with relative ease. Still no official word on pricing or availability, unfortunately, but we’d expect those details to be making themselves known soon enough.[Via Navigadget]

Verizon Wireless isn’t kidding around with this new Dare phone from LG: it’ll hit Verizon’s online shop tomorrow (the 26th) for $200 with a $50 rebate, and then land in retail on July 3rd. We’ve had little time to get accustomed to its touchscreen mug, unlike Sprint’s long run-up to the Instinct, but Verizon and LG have certainly done their homework.
