You probably weren’t expecting yet another luxury model of Nokia’s long-lived 8800 fashionphone, right? Well, the company continues to prove its dedication to the crazily expensive slider with its newest model, the Gold Arte. This precious puppy is dipped in 18-carat gold and has white leather on the front and back — just in case the gold wasn’t enough to prove its owners are living on the edge of obnoxious ostentation. Other than its looks, you can expect the newest 8800 to be pretty much identical to its Carbon Arte predecessor, with 3G, 4GB of flash memory, an OLED display and a 3.2 megapixel camera. We don’t know exactly when it’s slated for release in Europe, but we expect it to carry a pretty “impressive” price tag.

Rumors of a new Mac mini or iMac have been floated (and denied) for a while now, but one ferocious investigator’s feasted his eyes on a few pieces of rather telling evidence recently. A poster on the InsanelyMac forums found some code in his new MacBook which referred to “iMac9,1 and Macmini3,1″ which would seem to indicate that a newer version — current iMacs and Mac minis are marked iMac8,1 and Macmini2,1 — if both products are on the horizon. The new identifiers also list both as having “CFG_MCP7″ chipsets — the same NIVIDIA set used in the new Macbooks (current minis have Intel GMA 950 chipsets while iMacs have NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS GPUs). So… we’ll see you at Macworld, then?

NVIDIA’s Quadro FX 4800 might not be nearly the beast that the 5800 is, but it’ll only run you an arm and three-quarters of a leg versus every limb you’ve got. The GPU gurus over at HotHardware were able to grab hold of the 1.5GB monster, complete with a GT200 graphics processor and a sticker price around half of that shown on the aforesaid 5800 ($3,499). The board features a 602MHz GPU clock speed, 192 stream processors, an 800MHz GDDR3 clock speed, 384-bit memory controller and a PCI Express 2.0 x16 connector. So, how does the $1,999 workhorse stack up? Hit the read link for the full report, but the gist of it is this: it’s a stellar piece, but ATI’s FirePro V8700 was found to provide “similar performance (and in some cases, more) with a roughly 25% lower price.” Choices, choices.

On normal days, I would’ve commented:
Geesh… I know white is always right, - classic and elegant, but somehow this look kind of reminds me of Cruella de Vil, especially that Nick’s carrying a puppy with him. I just don’t understand why they (Nick, Mariah, and their dog) really have to match their looks.
