Samsung launches 10.2-megapixel L210 point-and-shoot

Samsung L210

Now isn’t this bugger just as cute as a button? Even if red isn’t your hue of choice, Samsung’s L210 point-and-shoot comes in black and silver motifs too, and while the 10.2-megapixel sensor is probably a bit much for a shooter this size, we suppose Sammy’s just following the trend. Aside from the pocket-friendly design and 3x optical zoom lens, you’ll also find a 2.5-inch LCD monitor, red eye correction, optical and digital image stabilization, face detection, an SVGA movie mode and ten whole megabytes of internal storage. Should that fill up on you during your outing (we know, chances are slim), you can slam an SD / SDHC / MMC card in for additional space. Not too terribly shabby for $199.95, yeah?

Dell offers up Blu-ray equipped Inspiron 1525 for $879

Fashion & Style, Gear & Gadgets March 30th, 2008

Inspiron 1525

Grabbing a laptop with a built-in Blu-ray drive isn’t at all difficult; finding one that’s reasonably affordable, however, is. Starting today, users looking to pick up a new BD-equipped lappie can get their kicks for under nine bills, as the base model Inspiron 1525 can be fitted with a Blu-ray combo drive (and the requisite 1.83GHz Core 2 Duo T5550 processor) for the low, low price of $879. Kicking things up to a Blu-ray burner will tack on another $200, and given the 1,280 x 800 screen resolution, we get the idea you’ll be utilizing that HDMI output in order to enjoy the 1080p capabilities (if it’ll even reach above 720p). Still, the aforesaid configuration is pretty lacking in most respects (1GB of RAM, 80GB HDD, and a woefully underwhelming GMA X3100 graphics accelerator), but hey, at least you’ll have Blu-ray! Grab yours now if you’re situated in Canada, Europe or the US of A.

JabbaWockeez Winner of American’s Best Dance Crew

Celebrity Spotlight, Fashion & Style, Film & Music March 28th, 2008

Tonight, JabbaWockeez was crowned champion and winner of American’s Best Dance Crew over Status Quo. Well deserved fellas, especially after that crazy week seven performance!

I still think the finals should’ve been between Kaba Modern and JabbaWockeez but what can we do eh? Randy Jackson must have felt it would’ve been a nicer finale, if the competition were between West and East coast teams.

Auditions for season two begin now on MTV.com.

MacBook Air reviewed… as a Windows machine

Fashion & Style, Gear & Gadgets March 24th, 2008

MacBook Air

There are a lot of reasons to pick another laptop over the MacBook Air — especially if you’re into little things like “useful ports” — but the comparison to non-Apple hardware isn’t even relevant unless you’re willing to switch to OS X, right? Well, the crew over at Xbit Labs decided to even the slate and evaluate the MBA solely as a Windows machine, wiping the drive clean of Leopard and installing Vista Ultimate. Although actually getting Vista on the Air was a bit troublesome due to the lack of a built-in optical drive and the Vista installer’s refusal to wipe out the OS X partition, once installed the OS performed fine, with Apple-provided drivers activating the media and brightness keys and even the multi-touch trackpad. The only major issues were over-aggressive activation of CPU power-management, which resulted in dramatic slowdowns during some tasks, and the fact that the case got fairly warm during use — both issues MBA owners using OS X have reported. Overall, while the MBA was a solid if unspectacular Windows machine, the lack of support and nagging issues with running a pure Windows MBA mean you’re probably better off going with laptop designed for Vista — hmm, we can think of one that might spark your interest.

Pentax introduces 8MP Optio V20 point-and-shoot

Fashion & Style, Gear & Gadgets March 19th, 2008

8MP Optio V20

Not quite able to squeeze into a size 2 chassis before PMA, Pentax’s Optio V20 now has the runway all to itself. This 8-megapixel point-and-shoot isn’t anything spectacular, but the 5x optical zoom is a nice complement to the 3-inch LCD monitor, face recognition, blink detection, USB 2.0 connectivity, video out and VGA movie mode. You’ll also find a SD / SDHC expansion slot in case 52MB of built-in memory just isn’t enough, and the rechargeable Li-ion is said to be good for around 200 clicks on a full charge. On board? Start pinching those pennies now, as this one will set you back $279.95 when it runs aground in May.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX500 features touchscreen, 720p movie mode

Fashion & Style, Gear & Gadgets March 19th, 2008

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX500

If Panasonic’s Lumix DMC-FX500 skipped out on PMA in order to get fitted with a touchscreen LCD monitor and HD recording capabilities, we’d say it was certainly a smart move. This well-spec’d shooter sports a pocket-friendly design, a 10.1-megapixel sensor, a 25-millimeter ultra-wide-angle lens, 3-inch touchscreen, 5x optical zoom and a swank movie mode capable of logging clips at 1,280 x 720 at 30fps. For those worried about said feature chewing through their SD / SDHC card (or the 50MB of built-in memory), WVGA (848 x 480) and VGA (640 x 480) video modes are available as well. You’ll also find such niceties as optical image stabilization, red-eye correction, face detection and Auto Focus tracking for good measure. Drooling yet? Chew on the choice of black or silver and get your $399.95 ready to drop come May.

Red Zune 80 now available… but only with Zune Originals engraving

Fashion & Style, Gear & Gadgets March 19th, 2008

Red Zune 80

Good news for all of you who missed the red Zune 80 during its short-lived (and somewhat delayed) Valentine’s Day cameo — Microsoft has decided to take your money after all. Yep, the red 80 is back, and it looks like it’s a permanent engagement this time. The only catch is that you’ve got to do it up Zune Original style, which’ll set you back another $10 - $15 on top of the usual $249, but that’s the price you pay to have your player match your kicks, Dr. Hipster McHip.

Guitar Grip gives DS owners the means to rock out

Fashion & Style, Gear & Gadgets March 19th, 2008

Guitar Grip

Good news, DS owners! You too will soon be able to shred just like those kids with stay-at-home consoles — sort of, at least. According to a first look over at Video Games Zone, the summer-bound Guitar Hero on Tour title can be really enjoyed with the aptly-named Guitar Grip. As you can see above, it is limited to just four buttons, but nevertheless, it allows users to hold the DS upright and tap the buttons of the peripheral — which is suitably fitted into the GBA slot — and strum the touchscreen to take care of the pickin’. Sure, it’s a far cry from wielding a full-fledged axe, but it’s not too shabby for shredding on the run. Check out a smorgasbord of pictures and a promo video in the read link below.

ASUS reveals 15.4-inch M50 multimedia laptop, Blu-ray / Penryn included

Fashion & Style, Gear & Gadgets March 19th, 2008

M50

Just a week after we laid hands on a pair of new multimedia powerhouses from Acer, along comes ASUS to keep things interesting. Announced today, the 15.4-inch M50 packs quite the punch, with options for Intel’s latest smattering of Penryn processors, an optional Blu-ray drive and an available ATI Mobile Radeon HD3650 with 1GB of VRAM. The unit also comes with your choice of WXGA, WXGA+ or WSXGA+ panels, any Vista flavor you like, WiFi, up to 4GB of RAM, HDMI and a built-in hybrid TV tuner. Also included is a dual-function trackpad, which enables users to flip through tracks or playlists and adjust the volume of the Altec Lansing speakers when not mousing about. Regrettably, ASUS has yet to dole out any accompanying pricing information, but we doubt this bundle of joy will be anywhere close to a bargain.
