YouNeverCall offers cash for first cell call from the moon

Gear & Gadgets September 23rd, 2007

We have bad enough luck with cellphone coverage in our own apartment to worry much about balls of dirt floating around in space, but YouNeverCall is tacking a slim $10k onto Google’s existing $30 million in moon-related prize money for the first cellphone call made by a device or a person on the moon, so if you’re headed there any time soon you might want to give it a shot. Sure, $10k probably pales in comparison to the expense of even adding a phone and related hardware to the payload — not to mention those hefty interstellar roaming charges — and it mainly seems like a bit of cheap PR for the YouNeverCall peeps, but we like the concept of a moon rover doing something more than just roaming and pesky science while it’s chilling out way up there. Whoever or whatever is making the call will need to be able to answer some simple questions while on the phone, and the call must pass through a commercially avaialble cellphone — though technical details are murky beyond that. Secondary prizes are also on offer for first SMS message and first usage for the Crazy Frog Ringtone.

Brando’s illuminated, flexible keyboard ain’t too pretty

Gear & Gadgets September 23rd, 2007

We’ll admit, we can’t recall seeing a rollable silicon keyboard that deserved to be called gorgeous, but Brando’s iteration isn’t even close. ‘Course, those enamored with glowing lights and plastic-y gizmos may not find much room to grumble, but all aesthetics aside, this thing is reportedly “strong, silent and indestructible.” Moreover, the $27 device is said to be dustproof and water-resistant, can be connected via USB or PS/2 and comes in white, pink, blue and green.

Enable disk use on your iPod touch

Gear & Gadgets September 23rd, 2007

While lugging around quarterly reports is likely to be low on your list of reasons to pick up an iPod touch, you may still long for that “Enable disk use” checkbox that you can’t access with the aforementioned device. If that’s you, word on the street has it that iPod touch owners can simply download a certain bunch of “Media Folder utilities to copy files to and from” your unit. Reportedly, the utilities are “based around a modified version of iPhuc, work with the iPhone as well as the touch and copy files to and from the Media / Documents folder.” Lastly, PPC Mac users can also get in on the fun, but it sounds like you’ll be dealing with a bit more “extraneous text” along the way. Asus’ Eee PC 701 exposed in Russian review

Gear & Gadgets September 23rd, 2007

9-22-07-701

Well, would you take a look at this. Turns out, 3DNews somehow managed to get their palms around (and within) Asus’ Eee PC 701 for a hands-on review. Granted, a heap of the writeup was a bit hard to grasp without understanding Russian (or being a master in deciphering broken translations), but we were able to notice that their sample unit boasted a 900MHz ULV Intel Celeron M processor, 512MB of DDR2 RAM, a seven-inch 800 x 480 resolution display, Ethernet, a 56k modem, and 802.11b/g. Additionally, the wee machine was even put through a series of benchmarks, so if you’re interested in digging through an early review (or just want to brush up on your Russian), head on over to the read link — but for those just yearning for a few more pics, they’re posted after the break.

Kayne West Beats 50 Cent in Album Battle

Celebrity Spotlight September 20th, 2007

As everyone in the forums had predicted, Kayne West’s “Graduation” album outsold 50 Cent’s “Curtis” in first week sales, according to an official report by Billboard.

Some interesting tidbits from the Billboard article:

The total for West’s “Graduation” is the largest by any album since 50 Cent’s “The Massacre” opened with 1.1 million copies in March 2005…”Graduation” also rings up the largest week yet by a digital album download, starting with 133,000, beating the prior record of 102,000, set earlier this year by Maroon 5’s “It Won’t Be Soon Before Long.”

Fiddy promised that he wouldn’t make any more solo albums if he lost to Kayne. It’ll be interesting to see how he’ll keep that promise, especially since he’s on contract with Interscope to release at least one more album.

Regardless of who won though, this “battle” was a brilliant marketing tool by both to sell more copies of their albums. Judging by the record breaking numbers, it definitely lined their necks and wrists with yet more bling.

Ashley Qualls isn’t your Average Teenager

Career & Money September 19th, 2007

whateverlife

How many 17 year old high school dropouts do you know earn $70,000 a month? Probably not any I’m guessing, so let me introduce you to one. Her name is Ashley Qualls, a teenage entrepreneur from Detroit, who has made an amazing amount of money from selling MySpace layouts on her website Whateverlife.

Fastcompany
recently published an extensive article on Ashley, which talks about her recent rejection of a $1.5 million buyout offer.

According to Google Analytics, Whateverlife attracts more than 7 million individuals and 60 million page views a month. That’s a larger audience than the circulations of Seventeen, Teen Vogue, and CosmoGirl! magazines combined. Although Web-site rankings vary with the methodology, Quantcast, a popular source among advertisers, ranked Whateverlife.com a staggering No. 349 in mid-July out of more than 20 million sites.

Not bad for a girl who doesn’t even have her driver’s license yet!

Create Controversy Like Diddy

Career & Money September 17th, 2007

There’s nothing like creating controversy to gain people’s attention, and hip-hop mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs does it best. Diddy released a new commercial for his “Unforgivable” fragrance that MTV has deemed too racy for viewers.A less sexy commercial would’ve probably made it straight to the airwaves, but wouldn’t have gotten the massive press buzz that causes people to wonder what all the fuss is about.

Some new iPod nanos afflicted with tilted screens

Gear & Gadgets September 16th, 2007

crooked-ipod-nano

The new iPod nanos are exhibiting screen problems for a small subset of owners, whereby the screen doesn’t appear to be completely level within the casing. More than a dozen people have reported the issue on Apple’s Support forums, with most reports saying video appears tilted slightly to the left. Apple is replacing units that exhibit the problem, although judging by some anecdotal reports, entire batches at certain stores have the problem, making replacement a far from adequate solution. Fortunately, it appears as if it’s possible to notice the issue with the nano inside the box. At least now we’ll know what the problem is if we run into any gadget fans with crooked necks.
